I was scrolling on my Instagram timeline back in October 2018 when I heard the song Echo by Elevation Worship featuring Tauren Wells and I was instantly hooked. That song made me feel so good inside that I couldn’t stop bopping my head and shaking my shoulders. When it got to the part that says,
When my mind says I’m not good enough
God, You’re enough for me, yeah
I decided I’m not giving up
Cause You won’t give up on me
You won’t give up on me
I totally lost it! I was like “Yes Lord. Hallelujah!” Not only does the song have a catchy tune, but the lyrics are also encouraging. I wanted more so I went on google music to see what else he had to offer and man was I in for a treat! LOL. I know I sound super corny and cliché right now but the music is so ‘feel good’ that it would bring out your inner corny. Don’t believe me? See for yourself.
In my google search I discovered that he had just released his first album in June 2017 called Hills and Valleys. The first song on the album is When We Pray and my favorite part is,
I see revival rising
I see hope on the horizon
As a generation stepping out in faith
The reason this part resonates in my spirit so much is because I truly believe that our generation is full of world changers and atmosphere shifters. I feel like our grandparents’ generation did religion, i.e. they were all about following rules and church rituals, so much so that our parents’ generation rejected faith completely or they simply didn’t take it seriously. But our generation, we are all about relationship! We are the Joshua Generation and we will see the Promised Land! LOL! But seriously, I think there is really something different about us. And that’s why I love the fact that the 20’s and 30’s ministry at my church, The Greater Allen AME Catheral has been rebranded JGen (Joshua Generation). But I digress.
Another reason why I love this album so much is because my 10 year daughter also loves it! We listen to it almost every night before we go to bed and one of her favorite songs is the title song Hills and Valleys.
The song is pretty much saying that no matter what happens God is always there with you. When you are up high, He’s the one that got you there and when you are down low, He’s there with you and will bring you out! At 10 years old all I was thinking about was how not to go to hell! I pray that I’m raising my daughter to have a different view of God. I want her to know that He is a loving father and all He wants is to have a relationship with his children. But I digress again.
My favorite song on the album is Known. The first time I heard that song I actually started crying because I was going through a lot on the inside but from the outside looking in you would never know. The song says,
It’s so unusual it’s frightening
You see right through the mess inside me
And you call me out, to pull me in
You tell me I can start again
And I don’t need to keep on hiding
I’m fully known and loved by You
You won’t let go, no matter what I do
And it’s not one or the other
It’s hard truth and ridiculous grace
To be known, fully known and loved by You
I’m fully known and loved by You
Around the same time that I discovered this album, I was listening to the Grace Like a Flood series by Pastor Michael Todd from Transformation Church so this song was just more confirmation from God that He sees me, He hears me and He knows! Man, God is so good! I just love how He speaks to me through music.
I didn’t grow up listening to music like this and the only music I heard that spoke about God was hymns at mass (yes, I grew up Catholic) and quite frankly some of them were pretty boring! That’s why I’m so happy that God is reclaiming what is His! I really wish I could talk about each one of the songs on the album and why I like them but that will take too long and besides, my taste in music may not be yours. My hope is that you will click on the links, go listen for yourselves and get the album. Maybe God will speak to you to!
Just doing my Father’s work!
